Vehicle Type Approval (VTA) is a procedure conducted on all vehicle models before the registration process is done. This is done to guard the identity, dimension, weight, build characteristics and the specifications of the vehicle to ensure that it is compliant with the stipulations set under 1987 Road Transport Act and the Road Transport Rules

Automotive Engineering Division is a division under JPJ its fuctions includes Leading the implementation of the World Forum for Harmonization of Vehicle Regulations (WP29) framework and developing motor vehicle safety policies, type approvals and harmonizing motor vehicle regulations at the domestic level in line with the WP29 framework. Implement Vehicle Type Approval and vehicle testing procedures for the purpose of recognizing Energy Efficient Vehicle (EEV) in line with the World Forum for Harmonization of Vehicle Regulations (WP29) framework complies with the Road Transport Act 1987. Regulate and monitor PUSPAKOM, Professional Engineers, engineering workshops, accident repair workshops and Rebuilt workshops to ensure that the activities carried out comply with the requirements under the Road Transport Act 1987 and the Road Transport Rules. Evaluate and provide technical advice related to the modification of the construction and use of motor vehicles to comply with the Road Transport Act 1987 and the Rules thereunder

JPJ together with Standard and industrial Research Institute of Malaysia (SIRIM), Malaysian Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI), Ministry of Energy, Science, Technology, Environment & Climate Change (MESTECC). Department of Standards Malaysia, Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (MIROS), Malaysian Customs, and Malaysian Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affair have established the “Malaysia National Committee for Type Approval (VTA) and Homologation” to ensure homologation management of motor vehicles From January 1, 2005, all new models entering the Malaysian market shall be tested and type approved.
